Butler Global Campus
Campus Profile
Butler is CAPCS’ downtown campus and has proved popular with families from the surrounding neighborhood and those working in the downtown area. With a global studies curricular focus, Butler prides itself on providing a multicultural “Global School” experience. Children explore the art, history, language, geography, and culture of other countries and how it connects to them. Through this interconnectivity students learn the importance of being a responsible global citizen. Administrators and teachers model and emphasize positive behaviors that help children develop sound social skills. Parents are encouraged to become involved in their children’s education through a variety of school- and classroom-based activities.
Letter from the Upper School Academy Leader
Thank you so much for your interest in the Butler Global School campus of Dorothy I. Height Community Academy Public Charter School. We offer a comprehensive curriculum for students in preschool through fifth grade, and we pride ourselves on providing a multicultural “Global Learning” experience for all of our 260 students (from over 20 different countries).
The CAPCS motto is “Expectations of Excellence” and we work hard to demonstrate excellence in everything we do. Our number one goal is to continue raising student achievement across the board, while providing our students with the tools that they will need in order to be accepted into one of Washington DC’s most competitive high schools.
Along with our strong focus on academics, we also believe in developing the whole child. CAPCS BGS places a heavy emphasis on the Responsive Classroom approach and Positive Behavioral Interventions in order to teach the social curriculum as well. Every morning we remind our students of the three school expectations:
- Always do your best.
- Always respect yourself, others, and the environment.
- Always exhibit pride, honor, and scholarship.
At CAPCS Butler Global School we strongly encourage parents to get involved in their child’s education. Each month we provide numerous ways for parents to have a positive impact on the school/classroom environment (Reading Partners Tutoring, Family Literacy Nights, Field Trips …). Please don’t hesitate to stop by and visit our school; we are very proud of the excellent learning community that we have created in the heart of Downtown DC, and we would love for you to join us!

Letter from the Lower School Academy Leader
Welcome to the Odessa and Wilson Butler Lower School where young children develop positive attitudes toward learning and lay the foundation for academic and social success. We believe not only that every child can learn but that every child is capable of excellence.
Children thrive in a structured, supportive environment where teachers are committed to bringing out the best in each child. Engaging children in a wide variety of age-appropriate activities helps them to develop basic skills and to master concepts. Children learn cooperation and tolerance working together, while guided exploration and discovery promotes curiosity and problem-solving. They experience the satisfaction of accomplishment which builds confidence. The global focus of our campus means that children are exposed to different countries and cultures through songs, games, art and hands-on activities. This promotes tolerance and an appreciation for others.
Our teachers are carefully selected and regularly participate in professional development that allows them to incorporate best practices in their teaching and enables them to address the specific needs of their students.
Our parents are expected to participate in the life of our school and they do so enthusiastically. Together we create a family atmosphere where children feel safe and supported.
We are proud of what we have created at the Butler Global campus and we invite you to stop by and visit us.

We need your support!
A parent-led effort to show support for CAPCS is underway. A petition has been created to allow CAPCS parents, teachers, and staff to send a clear message to the Public Charter School Board (PCSB) that we need CAPCS for our children. This campaign gives us an opportunity to voice our views publicly to our community leaders, future CAPCS families, and the DC educational community. The petition will be available to everyone in each campus main office this week. To further make our case, we invite you to also drop off a personal letter telling PCSB what CAPCS has meant to you and/or what it is doing for your child. These letters will be collected from each main office at the end of January and passed along to PCSB. Help us save our school!
If you want further information on how you can help, please contact Charlene West Thomas at 202-322-4213.
We are a family, we are a community, and we are excellence.
Butler Lower School Figures Reading is Fun
The Butler Lower School held its second Family Literacy Night of the year on November 8th. It was a packed house as students and their families enjoyed a math-focused evening in a carnival atmosphere. Students tested their numeracy skills with fun math games in each classroom and looked for math themes in books. Each family took home the math-inspired book, Each Orange Has Eight Slices.
