Ernest & Virginia Amos
Middle School Campus (Amos 3)
Campus Profile
The Amos 3 Upper School shares the math/science/technology curricular focus of the Amos 3 Lower school. Scientific inquiry and processes are brought to bear across various subject areas. Students develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that lead to success in higher level math and science courses. Strong emphasis is placed on seeing that students are prepared academically and socially to move on to secondary school.
Letter from the Upper School Academy Leader
Welcome!
Our community of learners at Amos 3 Middle School believes that a successful school must be both enjoyable and academically demanding. As a faculty we believe that if children are to acquire knowledge they must first be inspired to learn. We continue to believe that providing children with a healthy balance between creative and analytic work is the best way to build knowledge and understanding while kindling an intrinsic desire to learn.
We also believe education is, at its core, a moral endeavor and therefore a school should stand for and convey to students a set of basic human values. We strive to celebrate the inherent worth and dignity of all our students. Finally, we believe that our students benefit from a strong working relationship between family and school.
All schools share the common goal of opening students’ minds to the world of learning. We bear the common responsibility of providing structure for exploration and discovery. To this end, our Middle School offers Career Pathways in Pre-engineering, Allied Health and Environmental Sciences. We are blessed with remarkable resources for doing this. Chief among them is an excellent faculty with talent, experience, and a commitment to the education of young people. We take pride in our teachers’ ability to inspire and demand the best from students while at the same time earning their respect and admiration.
Thank you for your interest in Amos 3 Middle School. Feel free to contact us to arrange a visit to our campus so we can show you what great things we’re doing.

We need your support!
A parent-led effort to show support for CAPCS is underway. A petition has been created to allow CAPCS parents, teachers, and staff to send a clear message to the Public Charter School Board (PCSB) that we need CAPCS for our children. This campaign gives us an opportunity to voice our views publicly to our community leaders, future CAPCS families, and the DC educational community. The petition will be available to everyone in each campus main office this week. To further make our case, we invite you to also drop off a personal letter telling PCSB what CAPCS has meant to you and/or what it is doing for your child. These letters will be collected from each main office at the end of January and passed along to PCSB. Help us save our school!
If you want further information on how you can help, please contact Charlene West Thomas at 202-322-4213.
We are a family, we are a community, and we are excellence.
Designing the Future
CAPCS Amos 3 Upper school students and teachers are excited about the new Project Lead the Way engineering program which is already underway. The PLTW Innovation Zone (aka the classroom) is an engaging and thought-provoking place, where students develop critical thinking skills through hands-on project-based learning, preparing them to take on real-world challenges. Students will have the opportunity to create, design and build things like robots and cars, applying what they are learning in math and science to the world's grand challenges.
Classes will begin in the 2nd advisory as new materials and technology necessary for implementation of PLTW courses make its way into classrooms. Design and Modeling is being offered to 8th grade students. Flight and Space will be offered to 7th grade students, and Science of Technology to 6th grade students. Students are already excited about learning the design process and basics of engineering, while using their creative minds to find innovative solutions to the problems we face in our world every day.
Deputy Mayor for Education Visits Amos 3
DC Deputy Director for Education De'Shawn Wright got a firsthand look at all the good things going on at Amos 3 when he visited the campus on October 28. After meeting with CAPCS Founder Kent Amos and Chief Academy Officer Sadia White, Mr. Wright toured the Lower School with Academy Leader Ntaka Wellington and the Upper School with Academy Leader Leonard Upson. During the Upper School tour, the Deputy Mayor visited the classroom of science teacher Jeffrey Palmer where they discussed CAPCS' involvement in Project Lead the Way. From there it was on to the computer lab where math teacher Natalie Vanderbilt described what students were doing with the ThinkLink practice probes which help students build needed skills. Mr. Wright concluded his visit by returning to Ms. White's office where he met with Amos 3 Ambassadors Cornelius Johnson, Cynthia Ramirez, Cheyene Rountree, Leon Savoy, and Camille Stephenson. He expressed his appreciation for all he had seen and praised CAPCS' efforts in providing its students with a firm academic foundation and creative opportunities to develop skills and leadership abilities.

High School Fair To Be Held on November 9
CAPCS' annual High School Fair will be held on Wednesday, November 9, from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the Amos 3 campus. Representatives from local high schools have been invited to come and meet with CAPCS parents who are beginning the search for a high school for their children. Parents will have the opportunity to learn about the different schools, ask questions, and get an idea of which school seems to offer the best fit.
