Dorothy I Height Community Academy Public Charter Schools

Educators

We need your support!

A parent-led effort to show support for CAPCS is underway. A petition has been created to allow CAPCS parents, teachers, and staff to send a clear message to the Public Charter School Board (PCSB) that we need CAPCS for our children. This campaign gives us an opportunity to voice our views publicly to our community leaders, future CAPCS families, and the DC educational community. The petition will be available to everyone in each campus main office this week. To further make our case, we invite you to also drop off a personal letter telling PCSB what CAPCS has meant to you and/or what it is doing for your child. These letters will be collected from each main office at the end of January and passed along to PCSB. Help us save our school!

If you want further information on how you can help, please contact Charlene West Thomas at 202-322-4213.

We are a family, we are a community, and we are excellence.

Implementing Reading Street

The Resources on Reading Street page shows the resources teachers can use to teach concepts, the five areas of reading instruction, and conventions and writing. On the left side of the page, the resources are divided into whole group, small group, independent practice, and customize literacy. Digital resources are also available during instruction. The next page of My Planning Guide is My 5-Day Planner. Teachers refer to this page often, so it may be helpful to bookmark it. This page includes reading and writing topics for the week, target skills, vocabulary, review of instruction, and lesson page numbers. Teachers can see what to teach on Days 1–5.Using these Reading Street components helps teachers implement the CCSS for ELA.

Reading Street Demonstraion

Natasha Parrilla and Granada Butler gave a Reading Street professional Development to the Amos 1 campus. They provided video tutorials for the teachers to implement Reading Street with fidelity. The use of technology is so powerful.

Teacher Collaboration with Digital Tools

One of technology's most promising aspects is that it enables teachers to collaborate and share lessons plans, teaching tips, and other helpful information—both within and across districts, states, and even worldwide. Videos, video conferencing, and presentation solutions allow teachers to expand their professional development opportunities and collaborate with colleagues—all of which can help educators boost student engagement.

Ms. Llaguri's first grade class at the Rand campus and Ms. Brewster's 1st grade class located at the Amos 1 campus engaged in a fun and exciting Skype adventure! The two classes are working on the Common Core Standard Research to Present Knowledge (Participate in shared research and writing projects/explore a number of "how-to" books on any given topic and use them to write a sequence of instructions.) Ms. Brewster with the support of Ms. Marshall the EL teacher selected students during their publishing party to share and read their own written "how-to" books which included amazing pictures. Ms. Laguri's students will have the opportunity during their publishing party to share their books. This was a great experience for our students! It gave them an opportunity to meet and greet each other and also practice public speaking through technology.
