The K¹² curriculum brings lessons to life with a rich mixture of online and offline teaching tools, including interactive animations, award-winning printed books, original CDs and videos, and materials for hands-on experiments. Lesson plans for each subject are integrated, so your child may be reading literature from the same time period as the art or history lesson he or she is studying. By emphasizing certain recurring themes that build on the previous grades’ teaching, students increase their understanding of the most important concepts.
Lessons are followed by assessments to ensure that a child has mastered a particular area before moving on. This individualized approach means a child can go as fast or slow as needed. The online assessments are integrated with the planning and progress tools, making it easy to find the right pace by subject and to stay on track.
Language Arts/English - The K¹² Language Arts/English program helps students develop important reading and writing skills, while also inspiring a love of literature. Younger children learn the basics of phonics and grammar and prepare for reading through systematic, multi-sensory activities, while older students develop literary analysis and comprehension skills by reading novels and nonfiction works. Writing is taught as a process.
Math - K¹² Math balances mastery of fundamental skills with critical thinking and problem-solving. Students are taught to understand the concrete realities that underlie mathematical concepts. Through regular practice and review students master basic skills; challenge problems help develop critical thinking skills. Older students are introduced to algebra.
Science - K¹² offers real science for young students. The program balances hands-on experiments with systematic study of scientific terms and concepts. Students explore life, earth, and physical sciences in each grade, nurturing curiosity, analytical skills while gaining an appreciation of how ongoing scientific and technological advances shape our world.
History - K¹² History exposes young minds to far-off lands, distant times, and diverse cultures with integrated lessons in geography and civics. Kindergarten students take a world tour of the seven continents, and gain an overview of American history through the lives of famous Americans. Grades 1–4 explore the story of civilization from the Stone Age to the Space Age, while older students take a more in-depth look at themes and topics in world history and American history.
