CAPCS in the Community

As its name implies, Community Academy places strong emphasis on the concept of community, whether it be the community of learners within the school or the larger community of families, friends and neighbors beyond the school walls. Students are encouraged to see themselves as part of the community and to be responsible contributors. Over the years CAPCS has partnered with community organizations and entities in a variety of ways, providing students with community service opportunities and participating in annual fundraising events. Some community-focused activities are organized by the individual campus while others are school-wide. Over the years, CAPCS has built a reputation for generosity and compassion, often being at or near the top of DC schools raising money for drives such as the Walk for the Homeless or the Leukemia and Lymphona Society’s Pennies for Patients. We believe the opportunities to benefit others in the community are an important element in our students’ social development through which they demonstrate responsibility and experience the joy of serving others.

News of CAPCS in the Community

  • The families and staff of the Amos 2 campus are always mindful of the needs of their neighbors, especially around the holidays. A food drive was held to help bring holiday cheer to families. Thanks to the generous contributions of the Amos 2 community, 282 pounds of food were delivered to the Capital Area Food Bank, which gratefully acknowledged the donation.
  • In an effort to ensure that the less fortunate in the community had enough food for Thanksgiving, the Amos 3 Middle School sponsored a food drive. In less than two weeks, students and staff gathered 500 canned and packaged items which they boxed up and delivered to SOME (So Others May Eat). Middle School students worked with the SOME staff to see that the food items got on the shelves.
