A Message From the CEO/Founder
Welcome to the Dorothy I. Height Community Academy Public Charter Schools (CAPCS) website. I invite you to explore our site and learn more about the mission, values and vision that inspire our activities and fuel our success. CAPCS had its roots in a nationwide network of Kids Houses that provided safe, nurturing and structured after-school care. It has grown into a premier charter school with multiple campuses encompassing preschool through grade 8. Another “campus” is CAPCS Online, a virtual learning community for children for whom a regular "bricks and mortar" school might not be the best option.
Founded in 1998, Community Academy is a response to the pressing need for a high-quality educational option for urban students. CAPCS students engage in mind-expanding academic experiences, a stimulating after-school program, and a school family that views parents as partners. At CAPCS we are proud to provide educational opportunities to students in an environment that feels "small and connected," much like a nurturing village.
This environment is supported by an excellent group of teachers and staff members who daily contribute to a culture that maximizes student success. In turn, we expect academic and personal excellence from all students as well as their families. Our extensive testing and assessment program helps students produce positive outcomes on the annual standardized test. We also use multiple measures of achievement to give a more rounded picture. Our community focus is reflected in the many ways our students interact with the community in service projects, partnerships with organizations, and annual charitable campaigns, as well those organized for a specific need.
CAPCS is deeply dedicated to the vision of providing a world-class education rooted in an ethical culture. We believe that values such as commitment, caring, kindness, courtesy, responsibility and perseverance will make our children happy and contributing members of society regardless of their socioeconomic background. I invite you to visit our campuses or call for more information. I hope you will feel as I do that CAPCS is an institution that can expand and enrich the lives of our children and our community.
Sincerely,
Kent Amos
