Experience CAPCS! Clubs and activities are an integral part of our school culture. You are encouraged to become involved with groups of students and teachers who share your interests in a wide variety of areas including art, music, theater, the environment, social issues, volunteering, athletics, and entertainment.

Most clubs are open to all students. You should select activities that fit into your schedule and spark your interests. The clubs and activities are designed to promote common interests, develop a sense of ownership in the school, and enhance the mission of our school. Our programs:

Student Clubs & Activities

Academic Team
This team is going places! The Academic Team is meant for the true competitor who finds Jeopardy a snap. Competitions are held on various days and practices are scheduled twice a month. Be brave…give it a try—the Academic Team is open to all. This is the opportunity for academically talented and motivated students to be showcased and compete on the state and possibly national level. Club Latina
Club Latina is open to all 6th-8th grade students who are interested in various Hispanic cultures. The club provides its members with resources to learn about a variety of Hispanic cuisines, traditional costumes and holidays, religions, customs, geography, and languages. Festive events will be held in winter and spring for any curious students to discover what Club Latina offers to its members. The club will enhance the spirit of diversity within the CAPCS community by helping members deepen their understanding of Hispanic cultures. [Rand]

Chess and Gaming Club
Chess is a game of strategy. Whether a novice or a pro, only by playing will you improve your skills. This club provides the opportunity for students to learn from each other, win and lose graciously, to improve play and techniques, and to compete against other high school chess club teams. All are welcome! No experience is needed; instruction is available. [Rand]

Best Men
Best Men is a youth development program with a character-building curriculum for adolescent boys that helps them abstain from sex, drugs and alcohol. The primary goal of Best Men is to provide boys with the tools and the environment needed to help them develop into responsible young men. This goal is accomplished with the implementation of a multi-faceted program which: defines manhood, explains the consequences of their actions, provides boys with positive adult male role models to support and encourage them in their goal of becoming men worthy of respect, develops positive peer support, and promotes ongoing parental support, especially from fathers. Best Friends
Best Friends is a school based character-building program for girls that begins in the sixth grade and continues until high school graduation. Best Friends provides a developmentally sound curriculum in an educational setting which promotes fun, companionship, and caring. [Rand]

Debate Club
The major goal of the study of debate as a method or art is to develop one's ability to play from either position with equal ease. To inexperienced debaters, some propositions appear easier to defend or to destroy; to experienced debaters, any proposition can be defended or destroyed after the same amount of preparation time, usually quite short. This club will be offered to 7th and 8th grade students. [Rand]

National Junior Honor Society
NJHS annually inducts students who have demonstrated outstanding levels of scholarship, leadership, character and service. For the students eligible for induction during the 2007-2008 school year, initial eligibility is based on a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher. Students eligible for induction in the 2008-2009 school year or later will most likely have a slightly higher GPA criteria to reflect the revisions in the weighting and grading scales which are being implemented in September, 2007. Once inducted, members are required to provide a minimum of 15 service hours per year. [Rand]

Ski Club
Get bundled up because we're heading for the slopes! The Ski Club is for skiers and snowboarders of all ability levels from first timers to experts. Whether you use your own equipment or rent, take lessons or head right to the top of the mountain, snowboard or ski, don't miss out on the fun ---- join this great club! [Rand]

Girls and Boys Basketball
Players are introduced to a higher level of basketball with increased defensive pressure. Teams play ten regular season games. Zone defense, full court pressing and three point baskets are allowed in all middle school games. Basketball provides opportunities students living in grades 6-8 to learn and play basketball on a regionally competitive level, gaining exposure to teams from other area District of Columbia charter school along the way. Student Council Representatives (Grades 1-8)
The membership of Student Council is created by student interest. The students are then assigned a partner to work with, and a homeroom class to inform of the upcoming events. An end of the year recognition party is held to honor those students who have worked the most hours on student council activities. [Rand]

Dance Team
Dance team performs at various athletic functions. Performances consist of synchronized dance steps to popular music. Dance team is open to all students. [Rand]

Spelling Bee
CAPCS students will participate in the CAPCS School Spelling Bee. The top winners will represent CAPCS at the District and National Spelling Bee. [Rand]

H.I.P. (Highly Intelligent People)
H.I.P. (Highly Intelligent People) a club for young females.  The purpose of the group is to create positive, proud and proper young ladies.  The group meets once a week to discuss issues that concern the young ladies.  Monthly trips are being planned.  The first trip is to the Arena Stage to see "Women of Brewster Place."  Some of the activities and events that the young ladies would like to have are: social party, book club, etiquette lessons, and more. Female volunteers and donations are greatly appreciated and needed. [Rand]
