As the school year begins, so does Community Involvement throughout Community Academy Public Charter School. Community Involvement includes Service Learning and other community service projects that give your students the opportunity to learn more about their community in direct collaboration with their academic lessons.

Service Learning is a combined approach to teaching. This combination includes curriculum lessons such as science, math, social studies and reading with real experiences serving the community. At CAPCS, teachers and community leaders guide students as they address real community needs by planning and executing service projects that are carefully tied to curricula. This hands-on learning experience enhances comprehension, academic achievement, citizenship, and character development.

Community Involvement and Service Learning are extremely important to Community Academy. It is a unique approach to bring students, families and the community close together. This year, students will have the opportunity to raise awareness and money in the Mini Walks for the Homeless, collect coats and winter clothing for a local organization, and fund raise for children with Leukemia and/or Lymphoma through Community Involvement at CAPCS.

Family support throughout Service Learning projects is absolutely necessary for the success of the project. Parents will be needed throughout the year to help chaperone service trips, help provide materials for service learning initiatives, and support all Service Learning projects.

Here are a few events that you and your student can look forward to in the 2007-2008 school year:
